Solar Battery & Backup Installation in San Antonio

The grid goes down and you do not want to be sitting in the dark.

Nobody wants to get stuck without power. Storms and fallen trees can leave you sitting without light, air conditioning and appliances for hours. That is why so many people install backup generators, and a solar backup battery is the solar version of one.

It stores power while your panels are working. When the grid goes down, the battery takes over. In South Texas that has stopped being a hypothetical: the grid is the part of the system you have the least control over, and a battery is how you get some of that control back.

When a battery earns its keep

  • A storm knocks out the power grid
  • Your home gets disconnected from the grid
  • Your panels are damaged and are not producing
A solar battery backup system

It is not only for outages

The other reason to store your own power is that you produce most of it in the middle of the day and use most of it in the evening. Without storage the surplus goes to the grid and you buy it back later. With storage, you use what you made.

Whether that is worth the cost depends on your usage pattern and your rate, and it is one of the things we will actually work out with you rather than assume. Sometimes the answer is that you do not need one yet.

The electrical work is ours

A battery is an electrical installation before it is anything else: a transfer arrangement, a new load centre in most cases, and an interconnection the utility has to be satisfied with. All of that is handled by our in-house master electrician, not a subcontractor we called on the day. We are TECL #27328 and we carry workman's compensation insurance the State of Texas does not require us to carry.

If you already have panels from us, adding storage is a smaller job than you probably think. If your panels came from somebody else, we will still look at it, and we will tell you honestly whether the existing system can take it.

Common questions

What is a solar battery, and do I need one?

It is the solar version of a generator. It stores power while your panels are producing, and takes over when the grid goes down. It is worth having if a storm knocking out the grid would be a serious problem for you, or if you want to use your own stored power in the evening rather than buying it back.

Do you do the electrical work yourselves?

Yes. Design, installation and the electrical work are all in-house, and we have a full-time master electrician on staff. We are a licensed electrical contractor and we carry workman's compensation insurance, which the State of Texas does not require us to carry.

How does solar affect what I pay CPS Energy?

A grid-tied system feeds your home first and sends the surplus to the grid, so you save twice: on the power you no longer buy, and on what the utility credits you for what you send back. What that adds up to depends on your usage and your system, which is what the free assessment is for.

Roof or land, home or business, and roughly what you pay CPS a month. That is enough for us to come back with something useful.
