Solar is a numbers business. Not a green-living statement, not a lifestyle choice — a calculation about a bill you are going to pay one way or another for the next twenty-five years. So here is the arithmetic, plainly.
Utility rates are not going down. That is the starting point and everything else follows from it. A grid-tied system feeds your building first and sends the surplus to the grid, so you save on the power you stop buying and again on what the utility credits you for what you send back. Once the system is paid for, that is your rate for as long as it runs.
Incentives are a real part of the picture and they do not last. Rebate programmes and tax credits exist to jump-start an industry that could not stand alone without them, so by design they are temporary. They have a consistent history of going down each year, and occasionally of disappearing with little or no notice at all. Right now the commercial incentives are strong, which is why businesses, churches and non-profits are where the numbers currently work hardest. What is available to you at the moment you buy is something we will tell you at the moment you buy, rather than something you should read off a website.

Distributed solar is a win even for the people who never buy it.
